LEARN
HOW A SUSPECT'S BODY LANGUAGE MIGHT REVEAL AN ATTEMPT TO EVADE ANSWERING QUESTIONS
OR TO BE HONEST IN RESPONSES. PLAN TO ATTEND THIS TWO-DAY BASIC BODY LANGUAGE SEMINAR
AT THE UNITED STATES PARK POLICE ANACOSTIA FACILITY IN WASHINGTON, DC ON APRIL 24-25,
2008...
ASSESSING DECEPTION OR HONESTY BY OBSERVING A SUSPECT'S BODY LANGUAGE
April 24-25, 2008
Under intensive questioning or interrogation, individuals
often reveal involuntary behaviors that a perceptive interrogator can use to assess
deceptive responses as opposed to honest ones. This program will provide instruction
and demonstrations to give participants skills to read behavioral signals of certain
body movements that cannot be consciously controlled by the suspect being interviewed
or interrogated. Participants will learn how to improve their perception skills to
recognize indications of a suspect's statements indicating deception or honesty to
the interviewers questions. Some of the topics to be considered include: (1) when
do you start reading a suspect's body language?; (2) initial contact with the suspect;
(3) gesture clusters; (4) determining and establish a body language baseline; (5)
congruent body language; (6) involuntary body language; (7) types of gestures; (8)
eye contact and gestures; (9) hand movements; (10) lip movement; (11) breathing rate
and tempo; (12) voice gestures; and (13) validity of interpreting a suspect's body
language. INSTRUCTOR: Lt. John Thomason, Criminal Investigation Unit, Lakeland
Police Department, Lakeland, Florida. NOTE: This is a basic, introductory
seminar on body language for persons who have no formal or previous training on the
topic.
