COMMUNICATING WITH HISPANIC CALLERS: A SEMINAR FOR COMMUNICATION CENTER PERSONNEL
April 17-18, 2008
This program is designed to provide the communication center call-taker. It will provide information on how to obtain critical information from Hispanic speaking citizens. The monologue learned by students in this program will enhance the emergency telecommunicator's ability to narrowly identify the requirements of the caller, while controlling the conversation, determining the services needed and providing the appropriate response. Topics include: (1) A quick reference handout to use while at work along with an audio-tape; (2) Alphabet and pronunciation/handout and cassette tape; (3) Latin American culture as it relates to the emergency telecommunicator and/or call- taker; (4) civil liability concerns and recent cases; (5) determining in Spanish, the requirements of the caller, provide the service and officer safety; (6) key phrases and words to use to control the conversation; (7) key phrases on how to direct specific answers in a polite manner; (8) determining the location of an incident; (9) obtaining the description of the suspect. INSTRUCTOR: Carlos Hernandez, Communication Center Training Consultant, Richmond, Virginia.

DATE/LOCATION/TIME: Seminar will be conducted on April 17-18, 2008 at the Maryland-National Capital Park Police Department, 12751 Layhill Road in Silver Spring, Maryland. Class will be in session 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.daily.

FEE: $295 per person. Agencies enrolling three or more personnel are entitled to claim 15% team discount.
