LEARN HOW A SUSPECT'S
BODY LANGUAGE MIGHT REVEAL AN ATTEMPT TO EVADE ANSWERING QUESTIONS OR TO BE HONEST
IN RESPONSES. PLAN TO ATTEND THIS TWO-DAY BODY LANGUAGE SEMINAR ON JANUARY 17-18,
2008 AT THE ANACOSTIA OPERATIONS FACILITY OF THE U.S. PARK POLICE IN WASHINGTON,
D.C....
ASSESSING DECEPTION OR HONESTY BY OBSERVING A SUSPECT'S BODY LANGUAGE
January 17-18, 2008
Under intense questioning or interrogating, individuals
often reveal certain involuntary behaviors that a perceptive interrogator can use
to assess deceptive responses as opposed to honest ones. This program will provide
instruction and demonstrations so participants might enhance their skills to read
behavioral signals and other bodily movements not easily controlled by subjects under
stressful interviewing or questioning. The aim of the program is to make the investigator
more perspective in the observation of body gestures and outward unconscious physical
signs along with what the subject is saying to assess truthfulness to posed questions.
Topics include: (1) subject verbal and non-verbal message sending during an interview
or interrogation; (2) why body reactions often mean more than just what is said;
(3) becoming adept in seeing unconscious induced gestures and mannerisms. (4) pre-interview/interrogation
considerations; (5) importance of the interview room and settings involving chairs
and tables; (6) interviewer physical proximity to subject; and (7) limitations of
body language as cues to deception or indications of honesty. INSTRUCTOR:
Lt. John Thomason, Investigative Services Section, Lakeland Police Department, Lakeland,
Florida. NOTE: This is a basic, introductory seminar on body language for persons
who have no formal training on the topic.
