AN ALL-NEW SEMINAR PROVIDING AN IMMERSION APPROACH TO LEARNING SPANISH WORDS AND PHRASES TO ASSIST THE FIELD OFFICER IN COMMUNICATING WITH HISPANIC PERSONS WITH WHOM THEY COME INTO CONTACT IN THE COURSE OF ASSIGNMENTS. PROGRAM TO BE HOSTED BY THE U.S. PARK SERVICE AND CONDUCTED AUGUST 6-10, 2007 IN WASHINGTON, D.C....

SPANISH IMMERSION SEMINAR
August 6-10, 2007
Law Enforcement contacts with non-English speakers are increasing at an incredible rate. Of these contacts, the greatest number are with native Spanish-speakers, making the ability to communicate in this language a critical job skill for police, deputies, parole/probation officials, corrections personnel, and representatives of other enforcement agencies.

This five-day intensive immersion seminar will provide the necessary tools for each participant to fulfill his or her duties, maintaining control of the situation by maintaining control of the communications process. By applying the lessons learned in this course, street officers, investigators, and booking officers will be able to properly execute all of their police functions when dealing with Spanish-speakers. At the same time, the rights of the person they are contacting will be preserved by ensuring that the subject understands what the official is asking or saying. Topics to be covered include: (1) basic vocabulary; (2) statement of suspect rights; (3) searches; (4) vehicle stops and examination of contents; (5) information gathering; (6) making arrests; (7) investigative interviewing; and (8) street language and gang terms.

Each participant will also receive a condensed guide for dealing with all of these and many other situations of which officers are involved. A 76-page guide will be provided which is specifically designed for everyday carriage in a pocket, gear bag, clipboard, or glove compartment. Also included is a CD version of several situations, allowing the student to refresh course material and practice active listening in Spanish. Although English may be used during the study of grammar and vocabulary-building, the goal of this seminar will be to make participants comfortable operating in a “Spanish- only” environment for the duration of the course.
