COMMUNICATING WITH HISPANIC CALLERS: A SEMINAR FOR CALL-TAKERS AND DISPATCHERS
April 14-15, 2008
This program is designed to provide the communication center call-taker. It will provide information on how to obtain critical information from Hispanic speaking citizens. The monologue learned by students in this program will enhance the emergency telecommunicator's ability to narrowly identify the requirements of the caller, while controlling the conversation, determining the services needed and providing the appropriate response. Topics include: (1) A quick reference handout to use while at work along with an audio-tape; (2) Alphabet and pronunciation/handout and cassette tape; (3) Latin American culture as it relates to the emergency telecommunicator and/or call- taker; (4) civil liability concerns and recent cases; (5) determining in Spanish, the requirements of the caller, provide the service and officer safety; (6) key phrases and words to use to control the conversation; (7) key phrases on how to direct specific answers in a polite manner; (8) determining the location of an incident; (9) obtaining the description of the suspect. DATE/LOCATION/TIME: Seminar will be conducted April 14-15, 2008 at the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Police Institute on the campus of Nova Southeastern University, 8585 South West 124 Avenue in Miami, Florida. Specific directions will be provided on confirmation letter. Class will be in session 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day.

FEE: $295 per person. Agencies enrolling three or more personnel are entitled to a 15% team discount.
