THE SEMINAR SCHEDULED

ENHANCING SECRETARY / ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT, AND SUPPORT STAFF JOB SKILL
IN THE WORKPLACE
August 20, 2007
This one-day seminar is designed for secretaries,
administrative assistants, and staff personnel who work within such governmental
units as finance, public safety, code enforcement, procurement, building and zoning,
and other job related positions. Such individuals often serve as the first "buffer"
between top administration and internal and external forces. Further, they represent
the values of the specific unit to the citizenry it serves. The program will consider
the many and varied roles and responsibilities of the secretary and/or administrative
assistant along with the important position they serve to help the organization achieve
its goals and objectives. During the program, participants will learn: (1) their
role within the organization and exactly where they fit into the overall picture;
(2) importance of knowing from the beginning what the chief/director expects; (3)
recognizing the significance of knowing the community and the power structure within
it; (4) how to deal with angry citizens and easing tempers and tensions; (5) some
of the internal forces that create pressure and tension within the organization;
(6)when to speak for the chief / director when the situation warrants; (7) ways to
improve your verbal communication skills...certain words that can either arouse or
calm; (8) how to deal with ethical dilemmas; (9) some liability issues; (10) ways
of handling matters of confidentiality; and (11) some basics of conflict resolution.
