INTERNAL AFFAIRS INVESTIGATION: A PERSPECTIVE ON THE PROCESS
April 25-26, 2011
This seminar is designed primarily for persons newly assigned to the internal affairs function. It will provide an overview of exactly what internal affairs is about and its role within police, corrections, and security organizations. Program will provide an examination of the role of the assigned officer and consider various investigative aspects required in such cases. The seminar will conclude with a consideration of modern-day problems and issues such as sexual harassment and use of deadly force. Topics include: (1) organizational ethics; (2) proactive internal investigations; (3) departmental disciplinary process; (4) defining misconduct; (5) who should investigate; (6) the investigative process: practical issues; (7) investigative inquiry; (8) specific interviewing modes and modalities in these cases; (9) evidence collection and presentation at the hearing; (10) witness credibility; (11) review of the case; (12) post investigative; (13) case logging and filing; (14) procedure for expunging records; and (15) special problems and legal issues.
